I decided that I wanted to go back to Australia almost a year ago in January of 2016 and have been working tirelessly ever since, but it’s been difficult.
I am so close. I leave in about two weeks, but the road has not been smooth. Finding the program that I would go through, the university, and oh yeah… the money.
The most difficult thing that I have had to deal with by far has been my citizenship.
Having dual Australian and American citizenship is a blessing but it’s not always easy.
In fact, I just recently found out that I had it.
About 5 years ago I became a naturalized American citizen. At the time, I thought that ment that I had renounced my Australian citizenship, that is, until about 2 days ago.
I had applied for an student visa so that I could continue to go to university while I was away, but then I got an email.
This email stated that I didn’t need the visa because I was an Australian citizen.
Great, except for the fact that I can’t get out the the country without one.
So now I am in the process of applying for my Australian passport.
I have to travel to Chicago, Illinois to the Australian passport office and hope that I have all of the documents that I need and everything goes well. Plus, hoping and praying that it arrives before Christmas and before I have to reschedule my flights.
Oh, and did I mention that this is all happening during my finals week.
But I know that all of this stress will be worth it when my feet sink into the sand and I see the happy smiling faces of my extended family coming to hug me when I land.
